Hike to Stolo Rock Formation, Balkan Mountains
The Stolo Rock Formation is one of the hidden treasures of Bulgaria’s Balkan Mountains – a place where natural forces have left an extraordinary mark across millennia.
Located in the Ponor Mountain region, just an hour’s drive from Sofia, it offers breathtaking views, unique stone formations, and the chance to immerse yourself in pure mountain silence, far from the noise of the city.
In autumn, the trail becomes a stunning ensemble of colours, where fiery red and golden leaves complement the grandeur of the stone landscape.
⚠️ Important Safety Notice (as of May 2026)
On 1 May 2026, the local “Ponoria” hiking association reported a registered rockslide in the area of the rock formation. Hiking guides recommend visiting with extra caution, and walking directly on the rocks should be avoided. The earth in the area drops by at least 150 metres, and the rock blocks may be unstable. Before setting off, check for the latest updates from the “Ponoria” association.

What Is the Stolo Rock Formation
The Stolo Rock Formation is the result of geological forces that have been shaping this corner of Bulgaria for millennia. Seen from above, the work of these powerful processes is striking: it looks as if someone has sliced the stone massif precisely and vertically, leaving deep crevices between massive blocks.
In 2022, Stolo was officially declared a protected natural landmark – recognition of both its unique geological value and its growing role in Western Balkan tourism. It sits in the area between the villages of Breze and Dobravitsa, in the picturesque Ponor Mountain, a region increasingly sought out by nature lovers travelling from Sofia and from the nearby town of Svoge.
The Svoge area is famous for its rich natural diversity – beyond Stolo itself, you’ll find the Lakatnik Rocks, the Iskar Gorge, and many other natural attractions, making a hike to Stolo an ideal addition to a weekend exploring this part of Bulgaria.
Trail Description: Step by Step
Stage 1 – Reaching the Starting Point (Breze Village)
The trail begins in Breze village, where there’s a small grass parking area at the end of the settlement. Before setting off, be sure to fill up your water bottles at the local spring – there are no further water sources along the route. The village is small, quiet, and typical of this region of Bulgaria, offering an authentic setting for the adventure ahead.

Stage 2 – Across the Meadows Toward the Forest
Past the last houses of the village, you’ll cross picturesque fields where cows and horses graze peacefully behind electric fences. Stolo can be seen in the distance, but as is often the case with Balkan Mountains hikes, the distance can be deceiving – the rocks look close, but there’s still a fair walk ahead.
Stage 3 – Through the Forest
After a sharp turn, you enter a small forest where the trail markings become faint. We recommend using a GPS device or offline map, although the general direction remains clear and visible.

The forest welcomes you with its full beauty here – the path becomes a true ensemble of colours, scents, sounds, and views. Wherever you look, the natural scenery turns every moment into something unforgettable. This is one of the most rewarding walks Bulgaria’s Balkan Mountains can offer.

Stage 4 – The Challenge
The only more difficult section of the entire trail is a rocky slope covered in bushes and thorns. Once you’ve made it through, you’ll emerge onto level ground. Sturdy hiking boots and long trousers will make this section significantly more comfortable.
Stage 5 – Meeting the Locals
On the open plateau, you’ll probably encounter grazing animals. During our visit, we came across a flock of sheep guarded by formidable Karakachan dogs – a traditional Bulgarian shepherd breed. Be prepared for a loud “greeting” from these loyal protectors.
Stage 6 – Stolo Itself
And finally – Stolo. Rocks that look as if they’ve been carved with a knife, with deep crevices yawning between them – natural creations of unforgiving beauty. The views over the surrounding valleys are absolutely breathtaking.
🛑 A reminder once more: Following the rockslide of May 2026, it is strongly recommended to admire the Stolo Rock Formation from a safe distance. Do not approach the edges of the rocks and do not step onto the blocks themselves.
Why Visit Stolo
Even with the new safety recommendations, the Stolo Rock Formation remains one of the most impressive places for a walk in Bulgaria’s Balkan Mountains. Here’s why it’s worth the journey:
Unique geology. Few places in Bulgaria reveal the work of natural forces so clearly. The deep crevices between the massive blocks read like an open page from the earth’s history.
Silence and solitude. Unlike Bulgaria’s more famous mountain trails, you’ll rarely meet crowds here. This is a place for those seeking genuine mountain stillness.
Accessibility. The route is suitable even for beginners with basic fitness – an excellent choice for a one-day escape from the city. It’s especially convenient for travellers based in Sofia or Svoge, thanks to its proximity to both.
Practical Tips Before You Set Off
- Check the latest information. Before your trip, look for the most recent updates from the “Ponoria” hiking association or other official sources about the natural landmark.
- Start early. Especially in autumn, begin your hike to Stolo before midday to allow plenty of time for photos, breaks, and the return walk.
- Don’t rely solely on trail markings. GPS or an offline map will save you unnecessary detours.
- Share your route. If you’re hiking alone, let someone know your plans and expected return time – a basic but essential safety practice.
Mountain Encounters and New Friendships
One of the most rewarding aspects of hiking in Ponor Mountain is the people you meet along the way. During our visit, we became friends with a lovely young couple, the Dikanski family. That chance encounter turned into a wonderful friendship – just a week later, we ran into them again on the Berkovitsa Balkan, and we later visited the Lakatnik Rocks together.
If the wild beauty of these places captivates you, you’ll also love our Lakatnik Rocks: A Walk Through the Iskar Gorge – another hidden gem in the Svoge area.
The mountains have a wonderful way of bringing people together – and Stolo is one of those places that invites such connections. A big hug to the Dikanski family – you are wonderful!
