Climbing Kom Peak — A Mountain Journey in the Balkan Mountains
Kom Peak is the highest point of the Berkovitsa Balkan and the starting point of the iconic Kom-Emine trail — an invisible thread that crosses Bulgaria from west to east, ending on the shores of the Black Sea. Captivated by the magnificent views from the summit, the renowned Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov wrote “On Kom” — a tribute to the breathtaking beauty of the Balkans, a landscape that seems to open the very horizons of the soul.

Trail Description
From Berkovitsa to Kom Nova Hut
To reach Kom Peak, head to the town of Berkovitsa and follow the signs toward Kom Nova Hut. The town itself is charming and worth a short stroll. Just before the mountain road begins, you’ll find a water spring — a good spot to refill your water. The drive up is scenic, winding through sharp turns and offering beautiful views in every season.
After about 12 km, you’ll arrive at Kom Nova Hut (1506 m), where you’ll find parking and a rest area. This hut serves as the main starting point for the climb. An information board near the entrance displays trail markings for various routes in the region. The hut offers comfortable accommodation, a shared kitchen, a dining area, barbecue facilities and a children’s playground.

From Kom Nova Hut to Kom Stara Hut
From Kom Nova Hut, follow the marked trail for about a kilometer until you reach Kom Stara Hut, nestled along the route to the peak.

Through the Forest and Beyond
Past Kom Stara Hut, the terrain becomes more demanding. Proper equipment is essential — sturdy boots, enough water and food are a must, as there are no water sources further up.
Once you leave the forest behind, you’ll find yourself on an open mountain plateau between Malak Kom and Sreden Kom. Keep your eyes open — deer and hares are often spotted here.

Kom Peak rises ahead on the horizon. The trail offers a peaceful, gradual ascent before the final climb.
The Final Ascent
After reaching the ridge, the path steepens, rewarding you with stunning views on both sides. And then — the summit. A breathtaking panorama unfolds in every direction.
At the top, carved into stone, you’ll find the words of Ivan Vazov:
“From here the eye finds no barriers. The universe stretches humbly before me. The soul breathes with pride. From these mountains the mind reaches toward something bright!”
Standing beside the Bulgarian flag, with the vast mountain ranges spread below, the meaning of these words becomes real.
The people of Berkovitsa — the unfading flower of the Western Balkans, the town beneath Kom — take great pride that the Kom-Emine trail begins right here, from their beloved peak.
Kom Peak is an excellent choice for those seeking an accessible yet rewarding mountain adventure. The trail suits beginner hikers with good fitness and proper gear. We recommend setting aside a full day — not just for the climb, but to rest, breathe and take in the views from the top.
